Shark Bay

Shark Bay — known locally and officially as Gannaway Bay — is one of South Caicos’ most rewarding snorkelling destinations on calm days, offering varied and vibrant marine life in a setting that is dramatically more remote and untouched than anything on Providenciales. The bay takes its informal name from the nurse sharks that are commonly spotted in the area, though the broader marine life here includes turtles, rays, and the colourful reef fish that populate the surrounding coral structures. The beach itself is beautiful and almost entirely wild, backed by the rugged coastal landscape that characterises this part of the island.

Why Go — For excellent snorkelling on calm days, nurse shark sightings, vibrant marine life, and a wild and beautiful beach setting in one of South Caicos’ more remote and rewarding coastal environments.

Best For — Snorkellers · Marine life enthusiasts · Photographers · Adventurous travelers · Anyone specifically drawn to South Caicos for its exceptional underwater world

Insider Tip — Snorkelling at Shark Bay is entirely condition-dependent — calm, clear mornings produce the best visibility and the most rewarding underwater experience. The nurse sharks here are a genuine highlight and are most commonly spotted in the shallower areas of the bay. Getting there requires a vehicle with good clearance and some navigational patience; the remoteness is part of what makes the visit feel special.
